A refined flair for coffee guarantees that all aromas unfold to the full

The beans contain up to a thousand aromas, which can only completely develop during the roasting process. Therefore, only a master coffee roaster with a refined flair and in-depth experience can bring the unique character of every coffee to the forefront. In the elaborate Dallmayr roasting process for GRAND CRU, only the smallest amounts of coffee, around 20 kilograms, are processed at any one time. The beans are swirled in a stream of hot air, thus ensuring gentle and even roasting from the outside inwards. Only through such a process can the beans release their full aromas. With its fruity note, reminiscent of blackberries, peach and mandarin, Dallmayr GRAND CRU Gombe Reserve is a firm favourite. A wonderful coffee with a pleasantly soft aftertaste. The exquisite beans used to make GRAND CRU Gombe Reserve come from the lush hills surrounding the national park of the same name in Tanzania, which has become famous as a result of the research work carried out by Jane Goodall.

On the trail of Tarzan’s girl Jane Goodall in Gombe National Park

The Gombe National Park lies some 15 kilometres north of Kigoma in western Tanzania. It resembles a lush green island in the midst of a sparse landscape, offering a haven for many wild animals in its 52 square kilometres of primarily rainforest terrain. Jane Goodall began to observe chimpanzees here in 1960, and her research continues to revolutionise findings on the relationship between humans and primates today. After almost 30 years of research work in the Gombe region, the ethnologist decided to reveal her discoveries to the world and fight for the conservation of the chimpanzees’ natural habitat.

From the kingdom of the apes Good for humans, animals and nature

The forests surrounding the Gombe National Park are home to truly excellent coffee. The farmers who are committed to Jane Goodall’s conservationist philosophy and who protect the chimpanzees’ natural habitat are able to add a very special seal of quality to their coffee. For instance, the farmers agree to surrender up to 20% of their fields to rainforest expansion. In return, Jane Goodall campaigns for the rights of the coffee farmers and fair trade.

„Every individual can make a difference every day and at all times“ - Dr. Jane Goodall

The conservationist acts as a mediator between coffee farmers and roasting companies. She takes care of commercialisation, and with her seal of quality, guarantees compliance with the ethical regulations for which her name stands. In turn, the purchasers support the concepts of fair trade and sustainability promoted by Jane Goodall. As a result, everyone benefits: nature, the chimpanzees, the coffee farmers and the consumers – good for all.

Straight from the heart One of the best projects of its kind in Africa

In 1994 Jane Goodall developed a pilot project named the Lake Tanganyika Catchment Reforestation and Education Project (TACARE), a comprehensive conservation programme for humans, animals and the environment. The project is multifaceted and involves numerous measures for the development of village infrastructure, forestry, agriculture and health-care services. It is considered to be one of the best projects of its kind in the whole of Africa. Dallmayr is fascinated by the career and achievements of this British conservationist. ‘The chance to obtain this unique coffee from the Gombe region whilst supporting the ideas of Jane Goodall is something that is very close to our heart,’ explains Dallmayr coffee expert Mr Meyer-Lücke. Through reforestation programmes, for example, corridors of trees are being created around the national park, providing valuable habitats and shelter for chimpanzees. On the outskirts of these areas, inhabitants from nearby villages plant numerous coffee tree seedlings, fruit trees and other useful crops. This has become home to an array of wild coffee bushes, yielding the best-quality cherries in Tanzania. Given that the chimpanzees do not eat coffee cherries, a buffer zone is created, with benefits for both man and animal: the chimpanzees avoid the villages, and the inhabitants are no longer tempted to enter the forests as often.

GOOD FOR ALL The Jane Goodall Conservation Label

Under the slogan of Good for All, British primate researcher Jane Goodall developed a certification system for premium products which uphold high standards concerning fair trade, sustainable agriculture and the protection of animals. Products made and traded in such conditions may carry the Jane Goodall Conservation Label, just as Dallmayr GRAND CRU Gombe Reserve does.
