Despite being one of the smallest countries in South America, Ecuador is a big producer of truly magnificent coffee. Many family-run plantations are committed to ecological farming. Dallmayr GRAND CRU Manabi is a purely organic coffee. In the cup, it releases an intense, exquisite aroma, mild acidity and a fantastic, full body. Dallmayr GRAND CRU Manabi surprises coffee lovers with its flavoursome balance of floral and caramel notes.
The province of Manabí, with its capital Portoviejo, is the most important region in the country for the cultivation of coffee. The fertile high plateaus skirting the sea offer optimal coffee-growing conditions. A variety of trees offer shade to protect the coffee plants from both the sun and the hundreds of bird species which inhabit the area. The rich variety of fauna remains untouched by both the cultivation and harvest of coffee. For organic coffee, both tasks are generally carried out by hand. Intercropping with a range of fruit trees and other plants strengthens the quality of the soil.
Cocoa, maize, rice, cotton and an array of tropical fruits such as papaya and pineapple are grown in addition to coffee in Manabí. Other important sectors are livestock breeding, and fishing and shrimp farming along the coast. The region is also home to an authentic international export hit: the world-famous Panama hat is woven with toquilla straw in Manabí and is exported all over the world. The straw hat first became famous when worn by American president Theodore Roosevelt when he visited the Panama Canal construction in 1906. His photo quickly circled the globe, and the headwear, which actually originated in Ecuador, became known as the Panama hat.
The forests surrounding the Gombe National Park are home to truly excellent coffee. The farmers who are committed to Jane Goodall’s conservationist philosophy and who protect the chimpanzees’ natural habitat are able to add a very special seal of quality to their coffee. For instance, the farmers agree to surrender up to 20% of their fields to rainforest expansion. In return, Jane Goodall campaigns for the rights of the coffee farmers and fair trade.
Organic standards are based on the production methods used: therefore, the Organic Seal describes the process, not the product itself. Organic coffee does not necessarily taste better. Here, too, the special flair of a coffee expert for detecting high-quality beans has to unite with a master roasting process to release the coffee’s unique character. Dallmayr GRAND CRU Manabi intertwines exquisite coffee with organic production methods.
